She traveled alone on horseback to Virginia to find one of her sons whom was injured by the Yankees. She traveled back with him to bring her son home to N.C. to die.  Polly Tatham also saved her home in Andrews, N.C. from the Yankees who were going to burn it down. It still stands today and is a small Bed & Breakfast.
